November 9, 2013 - Vermont Weaving
History, A Work in Progress
Julie Singer George
During the summer and fall of 2005, four members of the
Vermont Weavers’ Guild along with VHS registrar, Mary
Rogstadt, documented every textile in the VHS collection.
Among the information gathered was the approximate age, type
of weave structure, type of piece, size, materials used and
other notes regarding the weaving. The four VWG members
included, Kate Smith of Eaton Hill Textiles and the
Marshfield School of Weaving, Trudy Otis, Katherine Clark
and Julie Singer George.
Among the coverlets and linens were a number of intriguing
linens in a lace structure called “spot weaves” or Bronson
Spot. Julie photographed and photocopied most of the pieces
and then analyzed the patterns, first on graph paper and
then entered into a computer weaving program. Once she had
created the draft, she wove samples of many of the linens
she had documented. Julie will talk and show photographs and
the samples about each step of the process, as well as other
Vermont coverlets, currently on display at the Shelburne
Museum. Documentation of the VHS study, the book “Echoes
from Our Ancestors,” written by other VWG members about the
Shelburne Museum coverlet collection project, the guild
undertook back in the mid-90s, and woven samples will be on
display at the meeting. Also, on display will be some
Tennessee coverlets and a newly acquired early jacquard
coverlet. While not related to Vermont, it will be fun to
look at these full size examples of some of the textiles
being discussed.
Standard workshop fee applies.
